why is self care so important?

Bethany Warren

What do you enjoy to do for fun? I want you to channel a few of your favorite hobbies in your head as you read this. I know personally as a student, I get extremely stressed very often. Not only as a student but as a person in general, we all do.  One of the best ways to cope and handle your stress is through self-care. Self- care is an act of doing something for yourself to recharge and it encourages self growth.  This is vital to our health because it provides a way for self reflection and demands time we need to work on ourselves. So let’s go back to my first question. What are some hobbies or activities you find enjoyable or relaxing? This is important to know as we all need to carve time to specifically do these things. There are so many ways to self-care. A few examples include but are not limited to: running, yoga, grabbing coffee with a friend, painting, playing an instrument, baking, and sleeping. These are just a few ways to unwind after a stressful week. Why is this important you ask? Well before you can be there for others, you have to recharge yourself so you can do the daily tasks of the week without constantly feeling overwhelmed with life. You have probably heard the saying, “you cannot pour from an empty cup”, well this is exactly what that conveys. You need to ensure that you are completely fulfilled so that when you give to others you do not run out. I know sometimes we may think self-care is selfish, but it is not. Self-care is far from selfish. It is merely a way to recharge so that you can be there for the ones you need in life. It is there to provide rest and relaxation the chaos of life. In conclusion, practicing self-care is a great way to relieve stress and promote self- growth.
